Walks, Rambling, Trekking in the Area

If a bit of light activity features in your trulli holiday plans in Puglia, here are four gentle-to-moderate walks, rambles, trek experiences in close proximity to our trulli.

Regardless choice, you will be blessed with beautiful views, ancient wonders and a guaranteed fantastic hour (or longer) activity.  All you will need is a pair of trainers.  If you choose a morning walk, pack a picnic lunch (or a sundowner for the afternoon).  There are plenty of places to stop, take account of your surroundings and simply marvel at the amazing Puglia countryside.  Enjoy!

The Aqadutto • Ciclovia AQP
(gentle)

The Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese is a 500 km cycling and hiking/walking path that follows the route of two historic aqueduct pipelines built in only 6 years beginning in 1905. It was built to carry water to drought-stricken Puglia from Irpinia in a district of the Apennine Mountains around Avellino, a town in Campania, South Italy, about 50 km east of Naples

Park in the Parrocchia Santa Maria Beata Vergine del Monte Carmelo church parking lot here:

GPS 40.70349764647104, 17.4221010030082

Either cross the street and walk to your heart’s content along the aqadutto walking/cycle path in the direction of Locorotondo OR join the path at the edge of the parking lot and walk in the direction of Ostuni/Ceglie through gorgeous trulli-lined meadows, across and early 20th century arched bridge and  take in the breath-taking hilltop views.

Olive Groves & Cave Dwellings • Ripari rupestri Lamacornola
(gentle)

Located in the outskirts of Ostuni's countryside, mid-way to the Adriatic sea, is a gentle, easy walk through centuries-old olive trees to an ancient cave settlement.

Park your car here (Google Maps):

GPS 40.795225052277765, 17.538248264345675

Walk 50 meters back along the road toward Ostuni until you see a trail (first right).  Walk (or cycle) to the cave dwellings through a beautiful grove of ancient olive trees, many of which are 500-1000 years old.

The cave dwellings are here (Google Maps):

Sanctuary of Sant'Oronzo & Fonte Miracoloso
(moderate)

This moderate walk (moderate uphill trail walking) of about 45 min each way brings you to a fantastic hilltop vantage point for both the murge and the olive-grove-filled plain below spreading to greet the Adriatic.

At the summit of your ascent is the Sanctuary of Sant'Oronzo . . . the patron saint of Ostuni . . . and the Miracle Fountain, Traditionalists have always believed that clear water gushed intermittently, even during the hot summer seasons, by the miracle of Saint Oronzo who, thirsty, would have hit the rock with a stick, giving rise to the phenomenon.

Located 5min by car from Ostuni's Centro Storico, park your car at Parco Archeologico S.M. di Agnano (Google Maps):

GPS 40.74851982695939, 17.547638348373162

Then walk 40 meters down the track and take the first trail on your left.

Puglia's Torre (towers)
Torre Pozzelle
(gentle)

There are more than 80 watchtowers along the Adriatic and Ionian coast of Salento.  One of the nearest is Torre Pozzelle.

Park you car in the parking lot here (Google Maps):

GPS 40.7699463225584, 17.663631540171735

. . . and then walk north along the cove to Torre Pozzelle.  Continue past the tower, heading north, to discover beautiful hidden rocky coves.  Alternatively, head south . . . more of the same, lovely coastal walk through scrub pines and Mediterranean wildflowers.

Other nearby towers to visit are Torre San Leonardo, Torre Guaceto (which lies in a regional marine preserve) and Torre Santa Sabina, which also happens to be an excellent waterfront lunch spot.
